Baby L has arrived!

Posted by Ethne~

Hey everyone!  Guess what?  It's raining babies!  Grizz and her husband Cor had their little boy, L, on Sunday and Slags and I went down to visit them last night.

He is so cute!  It never fails that I forget how tiny 7 lbs, 13 oz is!!

Snug as a bug with Auntie Ethne!

We think he looks like Grizz's dad, Shorty, so we have been calling him combinations of Shorty, Jr., and Shortstuff - that's what you get when you're a twin to your grandpa and the friends making the observations have known your mom and Shorty since 1st/2nd grade! :)  Even Grizz's mom, Claire, thought that her new grand baby looked an awful lot like her husband.  So funny.

Big sis, L, just wanted to play with Daddy, but since Grizz and Cor had only been home from the hospital for a few hours, I don't think anything had quite settled in.  She was just glad Mom and Dad were home.

Congratulations you guys!

Baby M has arrived!!

Posted by Ethne~

After much stretching of her mother’s stomach, Baby M is here!

Absolutely perfect!

We are most excited, as Steph is one of our very best friends.  I talk to her daily – and she’s in the GT echelon, meaning we’ve known each other since elementary school.

Since M had popped Steph’s bump out almost instantly, I had guessed at a 9-pounder, but she came in just at 7 pounds, 14 ounces.  I was totally off.  I was wrong on the name too, seeing as my suggestion was a combination of my middle name with Slags’ middle name (WHAT?).

Steph’s first comment (a text to us practically from the operating room, which we expected) was that M was FEISTY, crying non-stop from the moment she came out!  They got her calmed down and she’s been a dolly ever since.

This is how she came out.

I sincerely hope she does a nice meconium squirt on her daddy since he pretty well gags at the sight of baby poo.  Then we’ll really know if she’s still got that feisty in her.  Auntie Ethne has her fingers crossed.  (You're welcome, Ryan.)

In the meantime, Steph and Ryan and fam, have a ball with this wee little princess.  I can’t wait to meet her in person!  Congratulations!!  Then, you can get down to the important business of contemplating which cosmetic procedure to attack first: breast implants, tummy tuck or botox.  [All theoretical; WE don’t actually need THOSE things.]

GT Hair Tutorial: SOCK BUN!

Posted by Ethne~

Hey everyone - one last Girls Trip post!  While we were away, we played 'beauty parlor' and shared all our latest beauty tips and tricks.  One of the styles I often do on myself is the sock bun.  Done many ways (on Pinterest, a zillion pins), I've found this to be the easiest way.  I tried it out on Grizz, using my homemade sock bun insert (I cut the toe off a sock and rolled it up). (And PS, in the girls' accessories stand at Target, they have these sock bun inserts, ready-made, albeit in fluorescent colors.)

Put the ponytail wherever you want it.  Many of the sock bun styles have it in a high pony, though I prefer mine slightly lower.

Secure using a regular elastic ponytail holder.  Whatever you normally use will work fine.

Grab the ponytail through the center of the sock bun insert.

Push the insert to the very base of the ponytail (this is different from other instructions I've seen pinned, but it works for me and is super easy).

Tip your head forward and kind of evenly distribute the hair over the sock bun insert.  Now press your hand down on the center of the bun and start to twist the ends around and under the insert until it looks like...

THIS!  Keep wrapping and tucking in one direction only until it's all smooth, then secure with bobby pins.  I only had to use a few and Grizz has really thick hair.  The better you get at this technique, the fewer pins you'll need.

So much prettier than my usual sloppy ponytail!

GT 2013: STEPH'S SURPRISE SHOWER!

Posted by Lori~

We apologize for the break from blogging, but Ethne and I have been busy enjoying Girl's Trip 2013!  It was a fabulous weekend filled with all kinds of fun.  Ethne and I will have multiple posts dedicated to this annual tradition.

First up, WOM-MOM follower, friend, and GT Bestie Steph is around 36 weeks pregnant and adorable!

Isn't she adorable!
Christa and Steph just had a hair blow-out!  Doesn't it look awesome!
We decided to throw a surprise baby shower.  This will be her third baby, and it's a girl!  The best part was that while Steph and Christa got their hair blown-out we could get the party ready!

I made tissue poms...you can read about how to make them here.

We played guess the celebrity pregnant belly.  Steph rocked it! She and I are both pop culture experts!

Ethne made her famous hummingbird cake!  DELICIOUS!

Ethne made chicken bruschetta salad.  You can get the recipe here.

We made cucumber, strawberry lemonade.

We played pin the sperm on the uterus!  Ethne even made the sperms!  Cute--huh?

A Very Awesome Day.

Lori is coming to town!  Wanna know why?  It’s Girls Trip ’13, or as my bionic phone calls it when I text, GT’13.  Seriously, the Samsung Galaxy is creepy smart, you lame-o iPhone stodgies [namely, Dad and Whit].

We’ll be going off the grid, but I’m in one of my moods and I have half a mind to submit to y’all a fine essay on why the Kimye baby shoulda been named Mid West, after this fine part of the country.  I would, after all, be remiss NOT to comment on THE STUPIDEST BABY NAME EVER (besides Hashtag).

And finally, if you do not support gay rights, this post is done and we’ll see you back soon.  (No judging either way.)  But if you do, didn’t the Supremes rock it today?!?  (I’m such a nerd that I actually read their decision and reported it play-by-play to Shaun.)  Lori and I are thrilled!  LOVE=LOVE!  Check out The Bloggess here for more.

SLAGS' BABY SHOWER: Pink Ombre Cake + Buttercream Frosting Recipe!

Posted by Ethne~

This past weekend was Slags’ baby shower and it was fabulous!  She is the cutest mom-to-be, and I have so much to tell…but I thought I’d start with the cake Slags and I made for the shower.  It was GORGEOUS.  Shout out to Thrifty Nana (my mom) for letting me watch her make all my cakes as a kid so I know how to do it now!

The first thing I did was bake two 9” round chocolate cakes and two 6” yellow cakes.  I used box cake mixes because those are foolproof.  The cakes need to be baked a day or two ahead of time.  Thrifty Nana helped me out by baking these on Thursday.  Any batter leftover can be put into cupcake papers and baked on the side.  No waste!

The day of the cake-assembly, I whipped up the buttercream frosting.  You can find a recipe at Wilton online (lots of variations) but I use my own recipe.  Here’s what you’ll need:  2 sticks of room-temperature unsalted butter (which = 1 cup); 1 cup of white Crisco vegetable shortening (you must use this because butter just cannot hold up on its own, it’s too soft); 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract; 2-4 cups of powdered sugar (I know, I always give a big range, but I’ll explain that in a minute); milk or cream (I used heavy whipping cream because that’s what I had on hand); and food coloring (if you want).  To make the frosting, beat the butter and shortening and vanilla together in your mixer with the beater attachment, until mixed. [Note, you can try making this frosting with a hand mixer and large mixing bowl, and I think it will work, but I cannot make a guarantee because I have never tried it.  Sorry.]  Sift the first cup of powdered sugar into your mixing bowl.  It is important to sift the powdered sugar so you don’t get little pebbles of sugar in the frosting.  Mix slowly at first so the sugar doesn’t puff up everywhere, then speed up until everything is mixed up well.  Taste it.  It will probably be too buttery and not very sweet; it will probably not be very stiff.  You definitely need more sugar at this point.  Add another cup of sifted powder sugar, same steps.  Taste again.  You are going for a combination of buttery-sweet and spreadably stiff frosting.  If it’s too soft, it won’t ‘pipe’ on with the cake decorating tips well, but if it’s too stiff, it won’t spread on the cake with the knife for the layers and crumb coat and could rip the cake.  This is why I have you go a cup of sugar at a time.  If you think you’ve gotten it right, don’t second-guess yourself, just go with it!  If you do add all the sugar and it seems too stiff, add a dash of milk or cream; if you add all the sugar and it still seems too soft (could have to do with humidity), add more sifted sugar.  Because I was making a layer cake for Slags’ shower, with multiple colors, I made two batches of frosting – it turns out one would’ve been enough, but it would’ve been worse to run out in the middle of decorating the cake!!

So we know that Slags and Brian are having a baby girl, and naturally since PINK is my favorite color, Teresa gave me the go-ahead to run with my favorite color.  I was doing an owl theme, so I did a few other colors, but the cake DEFINITELY was going to be pink.  When I saw this ombre pink cake on Pinterest, I knew it was the one.  DECISION DONE!

Making a layer cake of this size is really easy.  It doesn’t require inner supports because it isn’t all that tall or heavy.  If you’re going to be traveling with it, though (we did it at the shower location), you may wish to put some food-grade wooden rods in the center for strength.  And because I was going to do all-over decoration with the cake-decorating tips, I didn’t need to do a perfect, super-smooth covering with frosting, just the crumb coat to keep the nasty cake crumbs out of the top layers of your cake frosting.

So place the bottom layer of your 9” cake onto wax paper, on or near the surface of where you will be presenting the cake, like a platter or cake stand (I didn’t start on the cake plate, but I’m used to moving cakes, so I have practice).  I put a layer of chokecherry jelly on the cake, then a thick layer of frosting, then the 2nd 9” round cake.  Starting with the sides of the cake, apply a generous layer of frosting, smoothing it out to a relatively thin level once it is fully applied.  Then apply a layer to the top, again, thinnish.  This is the crumb coat.  Now, gingerly slide the wax paper toward you and lift the cake onto the platter or cake stand.  I placed mine onto a round piece of cake paper lace doily and then cut away the visible wax paper.

Adding chokecherry jelly to the middle layer before frosting.  This is the 6" layer.
Thick layer of frosting on top of the jelly, in-between the two layers of cake
This layer of frosting will provide protection from those crumbs getting everywhere in your pink layers later
Now moved to the serving platter and onto the lacy paper doily

Do the same thing for the 6” cakes.  You will place this cake, once assembled into its double-layer, directly onto the 9” cake, so you must remove the wax paper from beneath it before placing it on.  It’s small enough that as long as you’re gentle, you shouldn’t have any problems handling it.

Side-application to the smaller cakes.  I turned the tops (from baking) toward the center because I had to shave the roundness flat a little bit.  The bottoms are nice a flat so I had those face out.
Beautiful!

Now that the cakes are crumb-covered and positioned, you just have to frost them!!  I wanted to do the graduated pink ‘ombre’ flowers.  Using the largest star tip I had (I couldn’t find TN’s entire collection of tips, just a few of them) and pink gel food coloring, I started with a very light pink, and made a swirl.  You can practice on a plate before you try on the cake if you want.  I did the light pink on top and graduated the darkness of the pink down to the bottom of the cake.  We did four levels of color.  I had to add some red by the last pink color level because we had maxed out the color intensity of the pink food coloring I had.

Making a circular swirl
Some were big, some were small; where there were holes, I filled in with stars
Color #3
All done!
Here's the coloring with flash - it's how it looked in person, but in natural light, you couldn't see the white spots of the crumb coat between the swirls that show up in this shot.

We left the to cake sit out overnight.  It’s good to let the outside of the frosting harden slightly (it’ll still be nice and creamy) so it won’t smudge as easily.

There were about 20 guests at the shower and we didn’t even eat half of the cake.  Don’t worry, you can feed a lot of people with a cake this size!!

So, as I observed on the Pintester’s site the other day, while most of Pinterest appears to be pins geared to make us feel worthless at painting our nails, baking, cooking, throwing parties, getting married, affording clothes and decorating our homes, there are a few things here or there that we can do!  And look, I’ve picked an ombre that actually can be done -- and doesn’t just look like your hair-color grow-out is too long and your roots just really need to be touched up!!

So dumb.

Awesomesauce: CELEBRITY FANTASY DRAFT!

Posted by Ethne~

Holy crap, Friends – the best friends and I have happened onto a gold mine.  A fantasy football league, except take out football and insert celebrities.  And except a half-year long season, once per year, it’s resolving 2-month seasons.  Have I died and gone to perpetual best friend heaven?

Lori, Kari and me (ignore that wack piece of bang I'm growing out)
Slags, Grizz, Steph and me

Yes, I have.

You see, discussions with my bffs, Steph, Grizz, Lori, Slags and Kari involve the usual – kids, husbands, pets (one-in-the-same-thing if you ask me), smutty books and INEVITABLY the latest celebrity news.  HELLO, Steph should write for tmz.  You should hear Steph and me when we get going about ‘Tan Mom’.  We are wiping away the tears of laughter, Friends.

Appropriately, I have a terrible chest cold right now, so I am hacking away as I cough-laugh-cry at this photo and Shaun may think I have lost my mind if I am reading his raised eyebrow correctly.  I realized moments ago that I forgot to include tan mom in my draft picks so I don't get to 'own' her.  Sad.

Steph gets all the important news on her iPad because she also subscribes to the key mags in paper.  At Kari’s & my office we have a subscription to People mag and it is one co-worker’s and my weekly challenge to guess what’s on the cover.  I have a decent guess-rate, though that’s gonna spike now.

People is always so generous with their man-scapes (not to be confused with 'man-scaping' - TOTALLY DIFFERENT.)

That’s right.  Celebrity Fantasy Draft is going to shoot my expertise into the stratosphere, my Friends.  It’s genius!  You can check the website for the rules – you accrue points by the celebrities you’ve drafted and ‘own’ as they are published in the pages of celeb magazines each week.  Whomever has the most points at the end of the 2-month season wins.  Smack talk is encouraged. (If your celeb effs up or gets on the worst dressed list, you lose points.)

Let me tell you, we are drooling with our excitement.  Like we’re Lassie and we have hydrophobia.  It’s like a Christmas present, minus the rabies.  The first season, for us rookies, is free.  Each season after that is $20 (for the whole team, which is gonna be less than $5 apiece for our group), up to 20 people per league.

Our season starts officially in December, which is why we did our draft yesterday.  It was rough, especially with us separated, and hard to pick, but we did all get several of our draft choices.  Slags hauled with the Kardashians; I hauled with the royals and the Obamas.  We’ll keep you posted!!!  If you do this, please comment so we can ‘hook up’ our leagues and keep track of how each other’s scores and celebs are doing.

xoxo
