I thought I was so smart making personalized coffee mugs for our family members
with the girls personalizing with Sharpie signatures! How cool! How
easy! How thrifty!
The girls’ much for Uncle Richie was no exception. It was a great teal blue color (Target,
$1.50) porcelain and they wrote their names on with great care. Uncle Rich received a Keurig coffee pot for Christmas, too, so a mug with his favorite nieces' John Hancocks on it was genius! And we're all about custom here Friends.
The many Pinterest instructions told me to allow the Sharpie
signatures to dry for 24 hours – DID IT.
The instructions told me to bake the mug at 350 degrees for
30 minutes – DID IT.
We gave the gift and Rich and Mel loved it. I told them not to put it in the
dishwasher since I hadn’t seen anywhere that the baked Sharpie was dishwasher
safe. But still, I figure
handwashing would be ok.
Then disaster.
Mel send me this photo after the first handwashing. They are so disappointed!
If anyone has suggestions, we’ll totally re-do the mug. Mel found an article on the total failure of this method here, just for laughs.

I bought a permanent ceramic pen that is food, dishwasher and microwave safe from a local ceramic painting store. It was $8. I painted a plate for a co-worker and people signed it when it was done. It worked great and it was baked like you tried with the sharpies.
I saw some at Michaels also- I think they were called Porcelaine- when I bought some that write on glass this past Christmas.
Thanks Nicole, I'll check it out!
